Maxwell - Pretty Wings

HE'S BACK!!!

Zero Point Red

Linda (who married the sexiest man in Geylang) and her 2 boys in Lunarin just put up 'Zero Point Red' which they did as the closing credits song for the documentary 'Big Brother 2' on their MySpace page.

She was nice to send me the song last April (I think). They had the tune on hold for that long. It's a bit different from what they did before. The song is under 3 minutes. Unbelieveable. Yeah. Nice shoes, Kah Wye.

Paper Hearts trailer

Starring Michael Cera and his real-life girlfriend Charlyne Yi. Looks okay but not great.

Swine flu music

That's right, bitches...

Check this out.

Playing for Change: Stand By Me

Got it off Teck.

This cover of Stand By Me was recorded by completely unknown artists in a street virtual studio all around the world. It all started with a base track—vocals and guitar—recorded on the streets of Santa Monica, California, by a street musician called Roger Ridley. The base track was then taken to New Orleans, Louisiana, where Grandpa Elliott—a blind singer from the French Quarter—added vocals and harmonica while listening to Ridley's base track on headphones. In the same city, Washboard Chaz's added some metal percussion to it.

And from there, it just gets rock 'n' rolling bananas: The producers took the resulting mix all through Europe, Africa, and South America, adding new tracks with multiple instruments and vocals that were assembled in the final version you are seeing in this video. All done with a simple laptop and some microphones.

From the award-winning documentary, "Playing For Change: Peace Through Music", comes the first of many "songs around the world" being released independently. Featured is a cover of the Ben E. King classic by musicians around the world adding their part to the song as it travelled the globe.

One Cause For All Women

Got off Pam.

N.A.S.A. (feat. KRS-One, Fatlip & Slim Kid Tre) - Hip-hop

This project is beyond cool. It is basically the brainchild of 2 US hip-hop producers.

From their Wikipedia page:

N.A.S.A is an ongoing, predominantly indie hip hop creative collaboration between L.A.-based producers Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon. N.A.S.A. stands for North America/South America and, in addition to the two principals, includes approximately three dozen other artists from both coasts of the U.S. and abroad.

Check out the details of The Spirit Of Apollo here. You can't put Nina Persson of The Cardigans and RZA together on a track and not have a great track.

I feel fuckin' inspired.

Little Boots - New In Town

She was featured in BBC as the 2009 breakout act. Her debut LP Hands will be out in June. It sounds like what Lady GaGa is doing but still, what's there not to like about a cute blonde who rocks the Tenori-On? She covers Hot Chip here.

Samurai Princess trailer

Billy sent me this. Robert Rodriguez's 'Grindhouse: Planet Terror' has nothing on this. But Rose McGowan's machine gun peg leg was funnier. I've seen another 2 trailers for Japanese flicks similar to this recently. I love the over-the-top violence. Hilarious.

Empire Of The Sun - We Are THe People

As recommended by Robin.

Kanye West (feat. Young Jeezy) - Amazing

I love the album 808s & Heartbreak.

Minuit - Fuji

The David Sparkle boys were playing in a Hanoi Music Festival last Saturday and the headlining act was this New Zealand electronic act Minuit. While it's not exactly groundbreaking, it sounds pretty good. Check them out here.

The Aging Youth

I just posted this on Facebook.

Hullo Aging Youths,

Long time no updates.

Zero Sequence's back in action. They will be performing on Labour Day, Friday 1 May 2009 at 1900hr. Venue is at Love The World Rock Bistro, Level 2, Singapore Flyer. Mang will finally make his debut as the new lead pipes for the progressive rock sextet! What's even better news than that is the show is FREE!!! So get y'asses down for a rockin' good time but we advise you to lay off the leather jacket for the time being. The weather's killer!

Check out Zero Sequence's music at http://www.myspace.com/zerosequence if you are new to them. The album 'Flight Of Transendence' is still available at all good music stores. And that includes Gramophone, Sembawang Music Centre, HMV, Roxy Music, Straits Records, EarShot and Sinema.

Allura's frontwoman Inch Chua will be debuting some tunes off her solo album 'The Bedroom' on Saturday 2 May 2009 at the Art & Vintage Flea Market. She will be performing at 1700hr at GOHD Books (519 Serangoon Road, #02-01). The event is in support of Post-Museum and Food #03. She'll be lugging her Baby Taylor (or maybe Martin) for an acoustic set. It's a small intimate affair where you sit around the artist and being up close, personal and all. No, don't bring marshmallows. There is no campfire.

Check out Inch's solo material at http://www.purevolume.com/inchchua if you haven't heard it yet. The music video for the 'Aqueous Oblivion' is done and we will let you guys know once it's up on YouTube/ Vimeo. Allura's jams can be heard at http://www.myspace.com/allurarock.

The Lard Brothers are postponing the (online) release of their remix album 'My Grandmother Can Remix Better Than You, Fatboy!'. They will attempt to put it out on National Day, Sunday 9 August 2009. Another National Day release? These guys are soooooo predictable. Why the delay? The new guard of The Lard Brothers Inc.'s executive committee has overruled the old guard's decision of releasing it in June. They cited that the old guard's direction for being industrious and punctual went against what The Lard Brothers Inc. stood for originally: "Fat and lazy".

Check out some of the remixes at http://www.myspace.com/thelardbrothers. Their debut album 'Forest Action Team' can be downloaded here.

We just called to say we love you,

Aging Youth Records

When I was thinking of rebooting the old web-zine, quite a few friends MSN-ed (is it a fuckin' verb now?) me to ask me to do it and actually volunteered for it. Firstly, I reckon we need to change the current site's look and get a bloody template.

ICE - spirit (live)

Recommended by Weiyuan. This Japanese band is pretty good but is no more as guitarist Kazuyuki Miyauchi has passed away in the past few years due to ear cancer. The irony.

Movie theme songs

An nonsensical interesting thing about doing the new Lard Brothers is that we are researching as many things and music genres online as possible. Weiyuan's colleague who is the ex-bassist of 90's punk band The Dongs told him that "though he understands where we are coming from, we try too hard". Ah well. I thought that was quite funny.

We are trying even harder for the follow-up. During the past few months, there were some intense research on the following subjects: National Anthems of different countries, public rally speeches, TV commercials and movie soundtracks. I've always loved the idea of having a certain music motif tagged to a character in a movie or TV series. And I've always loved Italian film composer Ennio Morricone. His works for those spaghetti westerns starring Clint Eastwood and his 'Cinema Paradiso' official soundtrack (OST) were nothing short of legendary.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly theme (live)

Everyone knows this tune. This live performance is conducted by the man himself. But my favourite theme is from A Fistful Of Dollars. Metallica covered 'The Esctasy Of Gold' from the The Good, The Bad & The Ugly OST before.

Love Theme (live)

This one was written by his son but essentially a derivation from the main theme of the Cinema Paradiso theme song. I love it.

Superman March (live)

I'm skipping 'Star Wars'. Everyone knows that... way too well. But I really love John Williams's score for Superman. Especially when you watched it when you were 6 and listening to this, you will believe a man can fly.

Batman theme

This is a classic by Danny Elfman. I love it. The movie tune 'Batdance' by Prince was crap though. I used to have the OST somewhere around. Must dig for it.

Halloween theme

I've never even watched a single movie before, not even the Rob Zombie's rebooted franchise. But director John Carpenter of the first movie is cool. He writes most of his movies' soundtracks and records them as well. His style is very much synthesizers as opposed to the rest of the abovementioned guys whose styles are more epic orchestral. I guess it has something to do with the budget too. Heh.

Tokyo Jihen - Sounan (live)

I dunno many of their tunes but from what I know, this is my favourite. This is pretty old footage, I think.

David Bowie - Sound And Vision (live)

I was lucky to have caught the man live 5 years ago when he was in town for his 'Reality' world tour. Probably, one of the best 3 concerts I've ever seen live. He's nothing short of amazing live. Check out the intense backing band, led by Gerry Leonard. This song is the one which Manic Street Preachers ripped off for their 'Rose In The Hospital'.

Prune-ly old

Inch has some new tunes on her Purevolume page. 'Rule The World' has this line "... til we become prune-ly old".

Raisins. White hair. Reminds me of something gross. Nevermind.

Electrico - Faces

The video's launched in conjunction with Singapore International Film Festival 2009.

Simply as designed...

Max is coming over to Weiyuan's track his vocals for 'Boys And Girls' which we are interpolating (I love such fancy words) Daze's 'Sexy Little Boy' into the tune. Way thanks to Don Bosco for giving us permission and 5 stars in the 8 Days review for Forest Action Team. Weiyuan still talks about that all the time.

The concept for the next album Simply As Designed is your typical boy-meets-girl love story for the first act. Max is singing the part of the boy. Yes, some of you might have thought he'd be more suitable for the role of the girl. But no.

In the song, Max "plays" the protaganist who is trying to get the girl-of-his-dreams to go home with him after the school prom. Ah, teenage drunken wanton sex. Everybody loves that. The tune will be done in the vein of one of our favourite acts, Pet Shop Boys with Zero Sequence's Simon helping us out with a finger-tapping guitar solo ala Michael Jackson's 'Beat It'.

Complaints Choir of Singapore

Cute.

The Complaints Choir invites people to complain as much as they want and to sing their complaints out loud together with fellow complainers. The first choir was organised in Birmingham followed by other cities around the globe. The lyrics were written by the Choir, the song was composed and conducted by Chong Wai Lun. A project by Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen. Produced by Fringe Festival Singapore 2008.

One Eyed Monster trailer

It looks damn funny and will be out on DVD on 18 May 2009.

When a ferocious blizzard strands the cast and crew of an adult film shoot, the ragtag band of eccentric heroes must band together against a mysterious and deadly alien menace which has literally possessed the casts largest member -- Ron Jeremy (naturally).

After slaying Ron, his detached penis embarks on a spree of carnal carnage on a colossal scale. With the help of a half-crazed Vietnam vet (Russ Meyer legend Charles Napier), haunted by his own wartime experience with this alien fiend, the race is on to trap and destroy this penile predator before there are more victims of its vicious, utterly unique method of murder.

Starring adult film legends Ron Jeremy & Veronica Hart and Buffy The Vampire Slayer pin-up Amber Benson, One Eyed Monster is an outrageous and spectacular homage to the classic sci-fi horror of "Alien" and "The Thing". Its also a thrilling, throbbing, thoroughly depraved comedy which dares to invade the parts other aliens can only dream of!

The Saturdays - Up (live)

I've no idea who they are but just stumbled upon the video. The female singer/ guitarist is quite cute. I think they are some girl band thing like Spice Girls. Don't be misled by the video; they are more Pussycat Dolls than The Pipettes.

Bright Eyes - First Day of My Life

Esther sent me the video. Simple but very nice concept.

Hey, you guys!!!

I love this show and followed it quite religiously when I was a wee lad. Was talking to Robin that I can totally remember the Sesame Street theme song. But for the life of me, I could never remember the theme song for The Electric Company, except for the intro line. Heh. The music is damn nice 70's psychedelic funk. Love it.

Read about it here.

I only found out yesterday that Morgan fuckin' Freeman used to be a cast member of the show! No wonder I've found him familiar when I was watching his movies. Hmmm...

There were a lotta fun segments in the show. Like Freeman's Vincent the Vegetable Vampire, The Menu Song, C, N Apostrophe T, Pandora and a hell lot more.

The Avalanches - Since I Left You

I was talking to Billy/ Robin/ Max (delete where appropriate) about this Australian act recently. I love their, well, only album Since I Left You which is entirely made up of samples. Great stuff.

Wolf And Pig

Got this off Kanye West's blog. I lurvvvveeee stop motion animation. Heaps of fun! I did a 10 seconds clip for Billy's work project on Good Friday. It took us an hour just to shoot around 10 seconds of footage but it was great fun.

The Roots - Rising Up (live)

The fucken Roots!!! This shit is insane!!!

Jeff Mills - The Bells (live)

Found this on Nat's blog. Great stuff. Techno legend meets symphonic band.

9 trailer

This looks really good! Check out an extra clip here.

Drayden's birthday

I was invited to Drayden's first birthday party last Sunday by the parents Noel and Ann. It was good fun, except for the fact that it was held at fuckin' Changi!!!

The goodie bag was insane but I didn't manage to get one. The whole party was Cookie Monster themed. Read about it here. I love the very 'cham' look on his face in the picture above. Hahaha, cracks me up.

I swear children's parties are an excuse for the adults to have fun more than an event for the kids. I mean, Drayden will grow up, not remembering a single thing from this event. But Uncle Willy will tell him: your dad was drunk and your mum was cycling around in a small tricycle meant for kids 7 years and below.

Tsk. Happy birthday, young man.

Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen clip

I dunno about you guys but I'm excited!

Daedulus - La Nocturn

Got it off Kanye West's blog.

Spacebar

Irman Hilmi of the Malaysian post-rock act KLPHQ has his own drum'n'bass/ electronic act: Spacebar. Check out his MySpace page. It's pretty good stuff. The track 'Second Coming' features Jerome Kugan on vocals. Dammit, everybody wants a piece of Jerome. Me and Robin are trying to finish up 2 tracks for both him and MC Vandal before heading up to Kuala Lumpur to track their vocals.

And the best thing is: Irman's agreed to do a remix for us. Woo hoo!

I'm currently stuck for the remix album which is supposed to be out on 1 June. The remix of amberhaze's 'Crush' is confounding me. I've no idea how to move on with the track. Fuck. And I've the stems (or individual tracks) of Adlin and Chingz's electronic-pop act Like Silver's 'Werewolves', DJ Koflow's 'Bank Street' and Breakbeat Theory's 'Serial Killers' looking at me. And I've no idea what to do with them. Well, not really for 'Bank Street' and 'Werewolves'. But still...

This is not good. Not good at all.

The Girlfriend Experience trailer

Steven Soderbergh (who rocks)'s new film stars Sasha Grey who is a well-known adult entertainment star. Kinho said that Soderbergh should have used Stoya instead. Woooo, Stoya. That'd be very nice.

As on Soderbergh's Wikipedia page:

He is developing his next directing effort, a 3-D live-action rock musical film based on Cleopatra's life, with Catherine Zeta-Jones in talks to play Cleopatra, and with music by the band Guided by Voices. Soderbergh and scriptwriter Jim Greer will rewrite the lyrics of the songs to fit the story. Hugh Jackman was approached to play Mark Antony but withdrew. Soderbergh plans to begin filming in April 2009.

Sasha Grey's pretty hot and is involved in several non-porn projects such as James Gunn's 'PG Porn'. James Gunn did the fabulous 'Silther' which starred Nathon Fillion (whom I've a broner for) and Elizabeth Banks (whom I've a boner for). Sasha Grey's episode of PG Porn is here while Nathon Fillion helped out on the debut episode here.

Tricky - Black Steel (live)

It's an amazing cover of my favourite Public Enemy track. Great stuff. The interesting thing is Tricky doesn't perform on this track. Hahaha.

Check out this tune 'Hell Is Round The Corner'. Yeah, some other trip-hop act also sampled the same strings on their classic tune. And this one 'Pumpkin' which features Alison Goldfrapp before she became famous as a diva. 'Pumpkin' contains a sample of Smashing Pumpkins' 'Suffer' which for the life of me I cannot recognise which part he chopped it out from.

Bob Mould

I've just heard his new album Life And Times, courtesy of Daniel. It's pretty decent, reminding me the first time when I've heard his previous band Sugar. It seems like an interesting statement of his music from his punk roots to his power-pop days to his recent forays into electronic music.

Bob Mould's from the same league of alternative indie rockers from the 80's like R.E.M and The Pixies. I love the Sugar stuff which was decidely more power-pop but wasn't crazy about his 80's hardcore punk stuff with Hüsker Dü. Hüsker Dü had a direct influence on the early 90's alternative rock acts like Nirvana. So you know the dude's of pedigree stock.

Check out some of Sugar's catalogue here. My favourite album is File Under: Easy Listening which I did a reference to the Lunarin remix I did a few years back. Absolutely no correlation and random, I know. Who cares?

Sugar - Gee Angel

What the fuck?!?!

What the fuck is this shit?

I Am David Sparkle - Nosferatu Makes Me Nervous

Something's wrong with my audio. I can't hear it. The vinyl (!!!) single is out now. Comes with an option for digital download.

Feist - The Water

The video is longer than a Michael Jackson music video. And you know it's fuckin' long man...

It stars Cillian Murphy and seems to be directed by Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene. The above video is just an excerpt. Check out the full one over at Kanye's blog. It's 15 minutes long.

s.u.p.a. (feat. Melina Williams) - Take It All

Alda's electronic project with his boss. Weird, I know... They got Melina of Tempered Mental to sing on this. She's an amazing bassist (the Wendy Phua of Kuala Lumpur) and singer. She sounds like Sophie Ellis-Baxtor here which is kinda weird since she's more known to be a rock singer than anything else.

Sunday, April 12, 2009

Very cool...

Indeed.

Life After People trailer

I love documentaries like this.

Portishead (with Massive Attack) - Glory Box (live)

I still feel like cryin' every time I hear this tune.

The Gene Generation trailer

This Hollywood Z-grade film is apparently directed by a Singaporean director, Pearry Teo. Looks really bad. I wonder if this would be those kinda films where it's so bad that it's actually good. Ah well, even the director has his own Wiki page. There's an extended clip here for your viewing displeasure.

Wednesday, April 08, 2009

Scott Walker: 30th Century Man trailer

Wooo, I didn't know there was a documentary about him. Brian Wilson is just as weird as Scott Walker but he gets all the fame though.

Scott Walker has probably the same amount of influence on popular and modern day British rock as The Beatles or even more. He counts people like Radiohead, Blur, The Last Shadow Puppets, The Divine Comedy, Jarvis Cocker and many more as his disciples. The man is probably one of the weirdest musical geniuses ever.

Here is an extended clip of the documentary. See people punching pork (triple alliteration ftw ya'll!) in the studio.

Child Rebel Soldier - Us Placers

'Us Placers' is the debut single of Child Rebel Soldier, a supergroup consisting of rap artists Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. The song contains a prominent sample of Thom Yorke's "The Eraser", incorporating the song's signature piano loops along with a vocal sample of Yorke's refrain for the chorus. The track appears on Kanye's Can't Tell Me Nothing mixtape and has circulated throughout the internet. Having been released on an exclusive mixtape, the song didn't enter the charts but managed to become listed at #43 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007.

This is a fan video with kids acting out the parts of Thom Yorke, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Lupe Fiasco. Cute.

The 3 of them did a remix of Pharrell's N.E.R.D's 'Everyone Nose (All The Girls Standing In The Line For The Bathroom)'.

The Love Experiment

Some of us were playing in the music group before. We recorded some tunes on our own. This was one of the oldest tunes which we ever wrote... like back in 2004. We've actually gone through this song with Andy, our original drummer and Melvin who was with us from 2004 to 2005.

The final version of 'Pomegranate' was recorded with Agilan on drums. Here's the product. This is my mix done on headphones which is not the best idea. But the tune was sitting in the hard disk drive for more than a year.

So what the hell... in the wise words of Ah Boy, owner of TNT Studios: "Not like you are going to win a Grammy right..."

"I started a joke..."

About a month ago, The Lard Brothers and Bryan crafted an elaborate joke: We decided to form a shoegazing band.

And we named ourselves Galactica. After our beloved space opera TV series, of course. The game plan was to go into the recording studio and knock out as many tunes as possible. Record them live and see how many people will take us seriously.

Yes, go check your MySpace friends now. We might be in your list.

We managed to churn out 3 tunes 'Saul's Tighs' (Nope, not a spelling mistake, you non-BattleStar Galactica fan infidel!), 'Gaius Is Crying... Again' and 'I Wish I Were A Cylon'. Hear Robin warble his way through some lines about Max being gay, how men are from Mars, women from Venus and Max is from Uranus...

The love can be found here. Strangely, an San Francisco-based shoegaze band, Foreign Cinema added us, thinking we were a serious act. Hmm... In all cases, they are pretty alright themselves. Check them out here.

The Great Spy Experiment - Class A Love Affair

This song is out about 2 years ago. Wish they did a video for an upcoming song instead.

But this kinda reminded of the Plainsunset one which is shot on an airstrip. Like U2's 'Beautiful Day' video. This is like U2's 'Elevation' concept of having the same band 'duelling' itself. Hmmm, I didn't know that Singaporean music video directors were so fond of Irish men...

Pet Shop Boys - Love Etc.

From the new album.

Ghostbuster

I got the link from Kinho who found it on Yeeyong's MrMisse forum. The link was posted by Bryan. I love my boys.

This website is about those old Chinese exorcists and it's a real business to boot! There are videos of exorcisms here. Check it out!

God Save The Girl

I kinda lost interest in Belle & Sebastian a few years back. It was like probably like 8 years ago. Time flies.

This is courtesy of Stereogum. Head honcho Stuart Murdoch forms a project band to sing the extra songs he has, gets his full-time band to record the album and auditions a number of really cute brunettes to be the singers for the project. And I mean, really cute. The official site is here.

I think there's something inherently very wrong with how I am approaching the Lard Brothers project...

Bruno trailer

From what I've read, most people (and even middle America) have wisened up to Sasha Baron Cohen's tricks. So 'Bruno' is supposed to be okay funny and more staged than 'Borat'.

It's a red band trailer. So it's 'for mature audience' only. *rolls eyes...*

So now you know...

And Megatron will be back...

*makes spastic transforming sounds*

White Lies - Love Lockdown (live)

Not that good but cute. This is, of course, a Kanye West cover.

Lupe Fiasco (ft Matt Santos) - Superstar (live)

Matt Santos sang the vocal hook on the original recording. This is pretty cool. They did an acoustic version of the tune. Rap with an acoustic guitar. Nice. Maybe, this is where the roots of Lupe Fiasco's idea for Japanese Cartoon came from. Hmmm...

In any case, I'm looking forward to catch him live at this year's Worldwide Festival! The full band version is found here.

Better Off Ted

I really like this new series.

A Fistful Of Yen

Old skool comedy spoof from the 70's. It's from this movie, Kentucky Fried Movie.

Video pirates

Arrrrrr....
